Sweet Almond Oil

Prunus amygdalus dulcis

Sweet almond oil is a light, nourishing oil that softens and smooths skin. With a mild scent and great spreadability, it’s ideal for balms and sensitive skin formulas.

What is sweet almond oil?

Sweet almond oil is extracted from the seeds of Prunus amygdalus dulcis, a species of almond tree native to the Mediterranean and parts of the Middle East. Unlike bitter almond oil—which is used in flavourings and perfumes—sweet almond oil is non-toxic and safe for topical use.

The oil is typically cold-pressed or expeller-pressed from the raw kernels, producing a pale yellow liquid with a mild aroma and silky texture. It's rich in oleic acid (omega-9), linoleic acid (omega-6), and vitamin E, making it a deeply nourishing and emollient oil suitable for a wide range of skin types.

What are the benefits of almond oil in skincare and balms?

Almond oil is a classic all-rounder in skincare, valued for its softness, glide, and skin compatibility. In balms, it helps loosen up heavier butters and waxes, creating a smoother, more spreadable product that still delivers nourishment.

  • Moisturising and softening: Almond oil penetrates easily and helps replenish the skin’s natural oils, improving suppleness and comfort.
  • Rich in antioxidants: It contains vitamin E and other compounds that help defend against free radicals and environmental stressors.
  • Soothes irritation: Often used in formulations for dry, irritated, or sensitive skin due to its mild, calming properties.
  • Improves texture: Helps balance thicker ingredients in balms and contributes to a lighter skin feel.
  • Suitable for most skin types: Non-comedogenic and gentle, sweet almond oil is well tolerated even by sensitive or acne-prone skin.

From orchard to oil

Almond trees have been cultivated for thousands of years, with their oil used in both culinary and cosmetic traditions across the globe. Today, sweet almond oil remains a staple in natural skincare due to its simplicity, performance, and skin-loving profile.

Its balance of lightness and richness makes it especially useful in balm formulations—helping create products that are both deeply conditioning and pleasant to apply.
